A few notes of caution and commonly asked questions:
  • All wild animals bite, even mice and moles
  • Skunks can spray up to 15' accurately. DO NOT approach the cage if a skunk is caught.
  • We have opossum in Maine. They are slow and have large teeth and will bite if cornered.
  • Seeing an animal once does not necessarily mean it is living in or around your house. It may have just been moving through. There is no way for me to tell this unless I find a den or trap the animal.
  • I DO NOT kill healthy animals. I release them in an appropriate location, unharmed. If an animal is injured I take it to Wildlife Rehabilitator Jen Lewis. Mrs. Lewis works at the Kennel Shop in Lewiston. She does not get paid by the State to rehabilitate these animals, it comes out of her own pocket. If I remove an injured animal from your property please consider a donation to Mrs. Lewis.
  • Animals that appear to have rabies or distemper will be euthanized humanely.
  • Animals that are injured beyond repair or that are suffering will be euthanized humanely.
  • Rabid animals do not foam at the mouth.
  • If you have been bitten by a wild animal, that animal must be tested for rabies. You will be notified of the results and given instructions on what steps to take by the Maine CDC.
  • Rabies can be contracted through direct contact with an infected animal's blood or mucous. You can not get rabies by simple inhalation or animal fecal matter, urine or by being in the same area as an infected animal.
  • Animals that are prime rabies carriers include: bats, skunks, raccoons, fox, groundhog, coyote and rats. All warm blooded animals can catch rabies. The least likely to have rabies are: opossum, rabbit, squirrel. Birds, snakes, fish and lizards do not carry rabies.
  • Bat guano (droppings), pigeon droppings, starling droppings and crow droppings can all be infected by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. This fungus can cause Darling's disease (histoplasmosis) which can be fatal if left untreated. The fungus is inhaled when the droppings get disturbed and atomized into the air. Let me do the fecal matter cleanup. I am trained on how to clean this material up safely.
  • Bat guano can be crushed into a shiny powder with your finger, mice droppings are hard as rock.
  • Northern flying squirrels are nocturnal and do not fly, they glide up to 100'. They are the most carnivorous of our squirrels.
  • Red squirrels and gray squirrels are diurnal. They do eat meat on occasion.
  • A bat can enter a 1/4" hole or roughly the size of a dime.
  • If you start to smell ammonia in your house, it is most likely animal urine.
  • You never have just one bat.
  • Female raccoons with cubs will attack without provocation.
  • A fisher's favorite food is house cat.
  • You can not use poison on anything other than mice, rats, moles and voles. If you use poison on rats be prepared for the smell of decomposition to permeate your home.
  • Maine Animal Damage Control does not use poison inside of any home.
  • The longer you wait to remedy a nuisance wildlife problem the worse it gets.
  • Please call to report captured animals between the hours of 7 AM and 7 PM. If you request me to pick up animals after 8 PM there is an after hours call out fee or $55.00 per hour. Thank you.
